Welcome
On behalf of the organising committee I would like to invite you to the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting of the NZ Branch of RANZCO to be held in Hamilton from May 24th to 27th. The meeting will be held in the new Claudelands Conference & Exhibition Centre in central Hamilton, ten minutes walk across the river from the Victoria Street hotels. (Transport will also be available between the hotels and conference venue.) Concurrent ophthalmic nurses and orthoptists meetings will be held at the same venue.
The theme of the meeting will be ‘General Medicine for the Ophthalmologist’. The programme will consist of short, very directed talks from colleagues in other branches of medicine on topics of relevance to ophthalmologists: how to recognise skin cancers, how to prevent complications from oral steroid therapy, modern management of multiple sclerosis, new techniques in plastic surgery, and so on.
In addition, we have as our international visiting speaker the eminent American neuro-ophthalmologist Professor Andrew Lee of Houston, who is renowned for his presentational skills. A third feature of the ophthalmic meeting programme will be a session on ophthalmic surgical techniques. There will be time for original papers, although most will be fitted into the format that has proved popular in recent meetings, rapid fire sessions with accompanying posters.
The programme will generally follow the Thursday to Sunday format of previous meetings with a few changes:
The welcome social function on the Thursday evening will be extended with adequate food and beverage to avoid the need to dine separately. The successful blind wine-tasting initiated at Nelson will be repeated.
We will endeavour to have combined social functions with the nurses and orthoptist groups.
The Branch AGM and the Save Sight AGM will be incorporated into the programme, the scientific sessions then running until mid Sunday afternoon. Every effort will be made to run the AGMs efficiently and concisely.
We will be offering two post-conference tours: a golfing tour to Taupo and Hawke’s Bay, and a trout fishing tour. The central city hotels are immediately adjacent to Hamilton’s beautiful extensive river path network ideal for walking and running, and the internationally famous Hamilton Gardens are accessible from the river path 30 minutes walk up the river.
We warmly welcome colleagues from New Zealand and Australia, and all trainees, to our conference.
